The Soft Power of Tartan – Scotland and Malawi

We were delighted to be asked to make Malawian Tartan scarves and brooches for an official visit of Malawi’s President to Scotland. President Peter Mutharika of Malawi visited Scotland last week to strengthen the long-standing relationship between our two countries.

As part of our developing partnership with International Tartan, ReTweed’s volunteers made these putting their creative skills into practice within record time to make sure the President and his delegation were able to wear their tartan accessories during their visit.

Scotland has a 156-year-old friendship with Malawi – a friendship built on mutual respect of culture and tradition and what better way to celebrate that than Scotland’s Icon: TARTAN – Malawian Tartan is designed by David McGill of International Tartan – philanthropist and entrepreneur.

Did you know……? The friendship between Scots and Malawians began in 1859, with the warm welcome extended to David Livingstone when he entered what is now Malawi for the first time.
